JAMAICA INVITATIONAL: A TASTE OF THE SEASON

Spectators were treated to a delightful evening of brilliant athletic performances at the 9th staging of the JN Jamaica International Invitational Meet on Saturday last.  Eight Jamaicans claimed the top spot in their respective event, three of which recorded world leading performances. 

The meet could be described as a taste of what is to come later this season.  World Record holder Usain Bolt opened his season with respectable world leading time of 9.82 seconds in the men's 100 meters. He led a Jamaican clean sweep of the top three places with Michael Frater (10.00s) and Lerone Clarke (10.03s).  His victory came on the heels of another world leading run by American Carmelita Jeter in the women's equivalent.  Jeter stopped the clock at 10.81 seconds to claim victory over Trinidadian Kelly-ann Baptiste (10.86s) and Jamaica's Kerron Stewart (10.98s).

 

The women's 400 meters race was one of many highlights of the night.  Novlene Williams-Mills electrified the stadium with her gutsy home straight run to hold off a strong challenge from American Sanya Richards-Ross, in the process toppling her from the top of the world leading list over the distance this year.  Williams won the race in a new world leading time of 49.99 seconds.

Bridgette Foster-Hylton's  cracker 12.51 seconds season opener brought a jam-packed stadium to its feet.  Foster-Hylton blasted out the blocks and led through the entire race to take victory in the women's 100 meters hurdles. Many were left pleasantly surprised by her early season form; a strong statement that she is back and ready for London.

Reigning World 100 meters Champion, Yohan Blake captured the men's 200 meters in a world leading time 19.91 seconds. He was followed across the finish line by three other Jamaicans, Nickel Ashmeade (20.09s), Warren Weir (20.21s) and Marvin Anderson (20.45s).

 

Other Jamaican winners at the meet were Olympic Champion Melaine Walker (55.28s) 400mh, Kimberley Williams (14.33m) Triple Jump, Hansle Parchment (13.19s) 110mh, Kemar Bailey-Cole (10.09s) 100m.

 

Personal Best Performances

Kimberley Williams won the triple jump with a leap of 14.33 meters and achieving the Olympic A standard. Her previous best was 14.25 meters.

Kemar Bailey-Cole won the men's 100m B race in 10.09s after recovering from a slow start. A massive improvement from his previous best of 10.28s.  His time would have given him a fourth place finish in the A race. He is now the 6th fastest Jamaican this season.

Warren Weir finished third in the men's 200m and improved his personal best from 20.43s to 20.21s. He is now 6th in the world and 3rd fastest Jamaican over the distance this year.

Hansle Parchment's performance might have gone unnoticed by many however it was a very significant one.  Parchment won the men's 110 meters hurdles in a brilliant 13.19s.  To put this in context, the national record in the event stood at 13.16s last year prior to being broken by Dwight Thomas who set the new mark of 13.15s.  Thomas had not ran faster than 13.25 prior to 2010.  He posted 13.18s in Hengelo, Netherlands before breaking the record in Oslo, Norway.  Based on Parchment's performance on Saturday night, it is quite possible that he could challenge the 13.15s record set by Thomas.
